An error message makes my heart sink. Especially when it’s blinking at me from the display panel on my washing machine. And when that error is accompanied by a metallic grinding sound and water that refuses to drain, you can bet the solution is going to be expensive and inconvenient.
The truth is I’ve never been particularly good at laundry, in fact, my first experience with doing laundry was at the beginning of my marriage when I unknowingly washed a red knitted jersey on the 90-degree spin-cycle. Leaving it with arms stretched way over a meter and unwearable. Not to mention that emptying pockets is something that always slips my mind. Over the years I have washed many non-clothing items including but not limited to:
- USB Sticks
- An iPod
- A Blackberry
- Rocks and pebbles
- and Multi-vitamins
- or pretty much anything my family leaves in their pockets.

This absent-mindedness has obviously been quite costly, and a sane person would probably have changed her laundry habits to avoid or at least minimize the loss. But not me. Which is why I found myself bailing out icy water and drenched clothes from the barrel of the washing machine one cool winter morning. After many hours of rerunning the draining cycle, I had to eventually call a repairer. Who had to haul a massive top-loader down a steep flight of stairs.
They discovered a mangled metal wire stuck in the draining mechanism. This wire had obviously slipped out of a bra casing and snaked its way into the pipe.
The damage this caused cost me about half of what a brand new machine would have.
If only I had used one of these laundry bags for my delicates.

So that’s the reason I wrote this post. To prevent you from making the costly mistake I made. Rather use a mesh wash bag for your bras or any other item that has embellishments which might fall off and lodge themselves in vital parts of your washing machine or tumble dryer. And of course always empty pockets.
Be proactive, and have an amazing week.
